About us
Our Story
Healthy Hood is a community based, non-profit organization based in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Currently, a twenty-year life expectancy gap exists in Chicago between underprivileged communities and affluent communities. To reduce that gap, Healthy Hood was created after partnering with Youth Health Service Corps, a youth based health-initiative program that works with local youth to educate and eradicate the five most common diseases that act as killers in communities of color. Healthy Hood believes the 5 diseases are preventable with early detection, good diet and daily activity.
In its inaugural role, Healthy Hood acted as a community center that provided health programming and resources. We soon realized that in order to reduce the gap even further, we must not only exercise the body, but educate the mind and awaken the conscience. Our team has developed different programming to initiate deep change and help our community become a healthy hood.
Mission
Headquartered in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, Healthy Hood was established to provide affordable programming and resources that elevate the mind, body and conscience, as means to combat the current twenty-year life expectancy gap between undeserved communities and high-income communities in the Chicagoland area and around the country.
Vision
In the next 10 years, Healthy Hood will not only spread to communities across the country, it will also help communities reclaim their autonomy.
For our communities to grow and bridge the social-economic and power gaps that hinder the underprivileged and people of color, we must end the vicious cycles that plague our communities and empower our future generations.
Our Approach
Exercise the Body. Educate the Mind. Awaken the Conscience.
Healthy Hood aims to help communities survive and strive by offering over 20 programs that cultivate the collective MIND, BODY and CONSCIENCE for a stronger future. Each program caters to the mind, body, and conscience. Each program is run by members of the community for the community. Check out the different programming we offer.
